At Soil Solutions, our potassium-based chemical injection method is engineered to permanently stabilize expansive clay soils beneath existing industrial, commercial, and residential structures. We employ a tested process, expert personnel, and advanced equipment to deliver effective subgrade treatment without significant adverse effects on the building itself.
To begin, Soil Solutions will use ground-penetrating radar to scan the concrete slab in all injectable areas. This step is important to accurately locate and mark any lengthwise and crosswise steel rebar and certain utility lines, allowing our team to avoid damaging any underlying infrastructure during drilling and injection.
Once the slab is cleared and mapped, Soil Solutions will lay out a specific grid pattern to ensure uniform distribution of our potassium solution across the treatment area. The injection holes are then cored using portable core barrel machines, creating 2 or 3-inch diameter holes through the slab at each marked location.
Injection is carried out using small-diameter crawler drills, each equipped with specially designed injection rods. These precision drills inject the potassium solution—mixed and stored at our on-site batch plant—to the specified depth recommended by the project’s Geotechnical Engineer. The batch plant setup includes a mix tank and a larger storage tank, enabling us to deliver consistent, high-volume injections without delays.
As we progress through our injection activities, Soil Solutions will use a high-capacity vacuum cleaning system to thoroughly clean the surface of all injection areas.
After each injection location is injected to the engineered depth, the treatment area is allowed 2-3 days to cure. This is to allow time for the chemical reaction to occur between our potassium solution and the expansive clays in the soils.
Once the curing time has passed, we work in conjunction with the third-party geotechnical testing lab to collect Shelby tube samples to test and verify that the expansive clay soils have been successfully and sufficiently treated in compliance with the geotechnical engineer’s specifications. These tests are to confirm the penetration and effectiveness of the potassium-based treatment, ensuring long-term stability and Owners’ peace of mind.
After receiving a passing grade from the geotechnical testing lab, Soil Solutions will fill the bored holes to the bottom of the slab to establish a stable base. We then apply a non-shrink grout to completely fill the hole through the foundation slab and ensure structural integrity is maintained.
With a meticulous process backed by proven science, Soil Solutions delivers permanent results—eliminating the risks posed by expansive clays and restoring stability beneath your structure from the ground up.
